How to generate a Project Scope Statement

Project Scope Statement
Items to include as part of a project scope statement:

  •     Why we are doing this project or Justification –How and why your project originated, business requirements and how any related activities will affect the project.

  •     Objectives – Services, products, or results the project is expected to produce.  Specify the deliverables and define your project objectives.  Quantify as much as possible specific attributes, performance, timelines, features, etc.

  •     Boundaries – Define the limits of the project. State what is out of scope or NOT included.

  •     Product scope description – Outlines the functions and features of the services, products, and/or the results your project is expected to generate.

  •     Product acceptance criteria –Conditions, Tests and processes needed for completion so that the customer has an objective basis to accept the services, products, or results.  Ask yourself the question; “How will I know I have achieved the objectives or how will I measure success?”

  •     Constraints – Restrictions that limit what you can accomplish in your project, how and when you can finish it, and how much it will cost.

  •     Assumptions – Highlight how information is dealt with as the scope plan is begun, planned, and performed.  List specific assumptions made.

Other considerations that need addressing that may not be covered above.
Be complete, specific and concise.  Test the Scope statement by having others read it and then describe back to you what the project is about to see if it is clear.
